Asian stereotypes – viral, annoying, explained?!?

When you enter ‘stereotypes’ on, you get the definition:

4. Sociology. a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group
So basically, the shallow image of a specific group of people have in common… no matter how big a group it is.
Since I’m do not have super-sonic-speed-typing skills or too much rant left in me these days (come on, it’s friday, I’m worn out ), I’m just going to elaborate on the stereotypes that I could be a part of…
Stereotype: We all speak Chinese, we’re all FOBs, we’re supposedly excellent at math, we eat rice all the time, we’re cheap andΒ  bad drivers, and we are always hardworking and get good grades. *BREATH* and we always have small, squinty eyes
Ok, first things first, ASIA, if you look at a map, is PRETTY HUGE… and it doesn’t just include the one chicken shaped country (China), Korea, Japan – just because someone’s skin is yellow doesn’t makes them Asian. Asia also includes Indonesia, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Macau, Malaysia, Georgia, Singapore, Vietnam, Yemen (which I think looks like Ramen), Turkey, and many more countries, SERIOUSLY, JUST GO TO WIKIPEDIA…it’s gonna take 5 seconds to scroll down the long list of countries and territories in Asia, kay?
Sheesh, you would think that the people who develop these stereotypes would check their facts first, but apparently they were either too lazy or lack the few brain cells it needs to do so. -.-
Second of all, rice is a staple food, THUS, it is meant to be served with every meal… with side dishes of meats, vegetables, soups and etc. in separate plates – you could say it’s almost a buffet with chopsticks :). BUT, as I am asian, we don’t eat IT EVERYDAY. We have congee, noodles, noodle soups, stir fry, LOTS MORE. Plus, don’t take it out on rice, it’s nutritious and goes together with most things. Just because everything’s not stuffed onto a plate doesn’t mean it’s “weird”.
I don’t know where they get this from, but ASIANS ARE NOT CHEAP. Most people make these false assumptions based on unproven observations – it could be the fact that compared to the average american/canadian, chinese people don’t spend as much on luxury. That is partially because of the habit of saving money and only buying what we need that has been passed down from generations in China, and probably other countries too (and i’m saying that from experience). Considering China was a pretty poor country back in the day and the societal pyramid consisted only of two main levels – the really poor and really rich – either you are starving and begging the streets for food, or eating out every two weeks. It’s just that simple. Usually chinese immigrants who goes to another country, like my family and I, have been built on chinese traditions. Thus, the saving has become more of a habit. That explains WHY my mom, and I’m sure whole lot of other parents, usually wait until a sale comes on to go crazy. So this stereotype, FALSE – we’re just smart shoppers. Cheap would be buying the cheapest brands of stuff for essential needs, such as toilet paper.
Bad drivers? Seriously? There’s 1.3 billion people living in China, WAY MORE all over the world, I honestly don’t think they’re all gonna be bad drivers – plus, it’s not like it’s in our genes – driverbadanatis? If you’re referring to large and complicated road systems in china with bikes, motorcycles, cars and whatever automotive vehicles there are in the world in the same lane, still with people who have enough balls to J-walk through all of this – that’s a completely different issue – blaming overpopulation on China- that’s like blaming someone who is already 9 months pregnant for having moodswings, blaming a teenager for having pimples, and accusingΒ  Usui Takumi of being sexy – IT IS JUST PREPOSTEROUS to accuse someone of committing a crime when it’s something that was expected to happen… -.-
Ahh. Math. No, we’re not all good at math, not all of our parents are mathematicians and engineers, and no, we do not have the natural ability TO BE good at math. Yes, there is a very tough education system in China – I know since I attended it until grade 2 (i was even the KAICHOU (class president) of my class) and that I had to pay 100 RMB per year to go. But still, use me as an example, I’m in a public school in Canada and I’m getting a 87 in math – and I know chinese people who’re getting even worse. It’s not in terms of what ethnicity you are in, it’s how hard you work. Same with hard work and good grades – yes, surely you can get by on not studying sometimes in elementary school, but once you hit high school – BOOM.BAM. Your slack catches up with you – so if you don’t work hard, and unless you’re a genius, your grades will go to down to the one you should get. Simple as that.
(at this point my word count is at 839, and I just realized that
I wrote more here than on my English Summative Essay xD )
So in conclusion, stereotypes, carried from some random guy/girl’s mouth, to the media, and every where else – not so true – it’s just that people don’t want to know the reality behind it. After all, our lives need illusion, or else life would be too unbearable to live, mentally that is.
Squinty eyes? I think – Miley Cyrus – with her squinty eyed picture viral on the internet – and she’s SHOCKED when people called her racist? Wow, Miley Cyrus, I’ve seen your show with your double life and stuff – never thought something would have more…typical disney…but your idiocy in that particular moment, knowing that you were a megastar, (now probably a Lindsay Lohan to-be), and letting someone take a photo of you that has a 99.9999% chance of ending up on the internet….WOW. Side comment – Never have a seen more of an grown up wannabe than her.
Finalement, I conclude my asian stereotypes explanation – I’m not a hypocrite, as you may think, because I am a proud Asian Canadian, thus I can easily justify my reasoning and analysis – but the truth is nobody really gets pissed off because of these stereotypes because most people know how to laugh at themselves, the reaction depends on the context.
fanatastic word, isn’t it?

Mood: Irritated – my right foot hurts

Word of the Day: PACMAN (reference to google)

Doing: Sneezing and blowing tissues

  1. Only absolute IDIOTS think that Asian people are stingy and bad drivers and stuff. In England, the people who make those sort of stereotypes are the ones that are literally FAILING at school/jealous. Asians are awesome πŸ˜€
Also, am so flattered by the Chimerical link πŸ˜€ thankyouuuuu πŸ™‚ The blog is only about 15 days old, so it’s still building in traffic πŸ˜€
BTW, awesome new site design πŸ˜€

and no problem, PACMAN IS MY PASSION?
LOL. the only reason i don’t have problems at my school with these stereotypes is because my school’s 95% asian – so we’re the majority HAHA πŸ˜€
as you can see, I’m prone to write excessively large amounts of text when I rant
surviving through all of that is an accomplishment all in itself ;D

Lolz sharon, this is so debatable. Well, like u said, not all asians r cheap but seriously, most of them r rude and mean and careless. they dont care bout anything and only fend for themselves. recently on the chinese news, there was this story where a chinese official went to germany for some meeting or watever and the people were disgusted becuz of the chinese official’s ways. i think this tells da chinese to stop being so obnoxious. heck even i am sometiimes.
china, as u said, is not the only country in asia but it is the largest entirely on the continent plus the big pop. so i guess thts y asians usually refer to da chinois. ugh, miley cyrus is a bad influence…btw wat does chimerical mean???

    • LOL. I’m just saying that stereotypes – which is saying EVERYONE ASIAN IS BLAH BLAH BLAH…is not true, because not every single person have specifically those common characteristics – it is false to assume one image on such ethnic group πŸ™‚

  3. No problem- I enjoyed reading your post πŸ˜€
lol Disney is utter rubbish, and I feel so sorry for you having to read through all of those comments by 7 year olds who don’t understand the concept of having your own opinion :/
Anywho, thankyou for your comment on my blog πŸ™‚ And Canada sounds absolutely incredible- I’ve heard so much about it everywhere (apparently there’s more than a million lakes there! Don’t know how they could all be crammed into one country- magic, perhaps?), and I’d love to go there too πŸ˜€

    • Disney’s plots too cliched and overplayed – considering they’ve been doing this for years on end, everyone is starting to get tired of it
Canada doesn’t have THAT MUCH lakes, just a surplus of fresh water in the Great Lakes
      everything else is….flat..?
You know what they say, when you come to Canada, you realize there’s only two seasons – Winter, and growing season xD
      “Canadian, Please” πŸ™‚

      • I agree- basically all Disney film plots are the same as the last, but with slightly different characters, all played by similar looking actors. England’s really, really small for a country with such influence. And perhaps you have only 2 seasons in Canada, but in England we don’t even have seasons- we just have constant rain πŸ˜€
I think today is the hottest day of the year so far, though- it’s 27Β°C πŸ˜€
I’m sure there is plenty of history in Canada πŸ™‚ I’d love to go to Cambridge, but you have to be unbelievably clever to get a place. I think you need to do IQ tests and everything 😐

        • Oh, and as an extra thank-you for mentioning my blog, I mentioned you in mine πŸ˜€
I know it might not make much of a difference to your traffic, seeing as I get about 5-20 views a day (depending on whether I posted on that day or not), but still.. πŸ™‚

I actually don’t know where the bad drivers stereotype came from. I mean, some things can be justified (I eat rice, and I’m thrifty, and I’m good at math… “OTL) but it’s more of a lifestyle that you’re brought up in if anything. And LOL, people barely think of all those other countries when they think of “Asian”… it’s a pretty broad amount of people to stereotype, no? XD

“accusing Usui Takumi of being sexy” HAHAHA you rock. And I give you a pat on the back for writing more on this than your summative! >.<-b

and I think it’s because China has the largest population in the world that the people overexaggerate just how much people there are.
but thanks for the comment πŸ™‚

  5. No, I bet that you get loads of views from other people too πŸ˜€
lol I’m a bit of an idiot most of the time- which puts me in SO many embarrassing situations. Seriously- I’ve been in 3 rather embarrassing situations today already. Well, I’m in these situations rather regularly, so I’m used to those sorts of situations. πŸ˜€
But even I wouldn’t draw on my face, call it a mask and rob someone or something like that πŸ™‚
Thankyou for commenting, and yes- you are brilliant πŸ™‚

Asian people are taking over Vancouver!!!!!!! Vancouver is supposed to be friggin multicultural, and yet everywhere I go, Asians have literally bought and taken over malls/stores/entire districts and cities in BC. I have never had a problem with asian people before and I have lived in Vancouver for 26 years. But seriously, every single generation of specifically: Chinese/Korean/Japanese people living in Vancouver that I have had the chance to encounter are mean mean mean! They ARE cheap as hell and then get mad at you for asking why something is set at a high price and yell at you to get out of their store, and they watch you when THEY park beside you to see if you’re gonna dent their friggin car!!! (I should know, I had this problem today!) Its like they look at you like your a freaking criminal. Stop coming to CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don’t need to populate the entire world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t care if this is mean, because you all are working my last fucking nerve!!!!!!!!

    • Matt says:

You know what you have a point there. Asians belong in Asia and that means stop migrating. China is going alright so I don’t understand why they don’t go back to their own culture. You have to control their population otherwise they will take over as that is what they are good at doing. Multicultural to me is people from different cultures and not just Asians. Vancouver in this case if you are not exaggerating is experiencing big problems with Asians and the Canadian government needs to intervene perhaps even revert to a white Canada policy or something to ensure Canadian culture is not eroded and there are a healthy number of Canadians in Vancouver, The rest of Canada I think would be fine, Asians are also discriminatory so if they own a mall guess who will have the leases and jobs in the mall…… Asians and not Canadians. This is where multiculturalism is failing now. Time to revert back to bringing in whites only to Canada as racist as this policy is. If Asians want to be racist people in Vancouver needs to get tough and be racist back. Otherwise Vancouver may as well be called Shanghai or Beijing. Do you want to walk down the street and only see Asians and no Canadians or heaps of Asian people? It is up to the people in Vancouver to voice their opinions.
